Red grape · also Tourigo, Preto Mortágua

Touriga Nacional

Portugal's flagship red — violet, bergamot and noble tannin.

Aromas

Violet, bergamot, rockrose, blackberry and wild herbs

Structure

Deep colour, firm ripe tannins, fresh acidity

Ageing

20–50+ years in great Ports; 10–25 years in top reds

Origin & history

Thought to have originated in the Dão, Touriga Nacional nearly vanished in the 20th century because of its tiny yields. Clonal research in the 1970s and 80s saved it, and today it is the backbone of Vintage Port and Portugal's most celebrated table reds.

Wine styles

Vintage Port, single-variety reds, and the lead voice in Douro and Dão blends.

Food pairing

Roast kid, game birds, aged Serra da Estrela cheese, dark chocolate with Port.
